March 1st, 2018, Nashville, Tennessee–InDo Nashville is thrilled to congratulate our tenants, TomKats Hospitality, on the opening of their new restaurant and club Woolworth on 5th. Tom Morales and his superstar team have done a beautiful job at preserving and repurposing this important historic site in the civil rights movement in Nashville.
Woolworth on 5th was formerly a “five and dime” store in the 1960s and was the site for several lunch counter sit-ins to protest segregation led by congressman and civil rights leader John Lewis. TomKats has recreated Woolworth on 5th to pay homage to Nashville’s civil rights history by restoring the restaurant to showcase its 1960s’ identity with repairing original features and incorporating retro decor. Along the restaurant’s wall, you will see original artwork and photography of civil rights history and John Lewis that showcase the history that took place right in their building.
The three story venue will feature a menu that portrays southern culinary arts that is packed with flavor and tradition. The restaurant will also feature a soul and rock ‘n’ roll house band, Downtown Dippers. Woolworth on 5th will provide a historical experience and environment where everyone can dine and dance no matter what race. We are very excited to see the impact of TomKats Hospitality’s latest project on the community. Be sure to make your way to 221 5th Ave. N and check out the Woolworth on 5th for yourself
