Meet The Musician's Physician!

For this month’s Spotlight, we sat down and chatted with Dr. Charlie Kautz, our InHouse, licensed Chiropractor to get to know more about him and his business!

Tell me about your business/work:

I am a chiropractor who has had the incredible opportunity to have spent nearly my entire career taking care of professional touring musicians. One aspect of my business is mobile chiropractic services, setting up on-site at music venues and studios, or even on tour. I relocated to Nashville not only to be a natural health and wellness resource for the music community here but also to create a brick-and-mortar space. My style of practice is boutique, concierge-style, and features thorough examinations and treatments, education, and a non-cookie-cutter approach to identifying the root cause and correcting it as quickly as possible.

I’m a certified Active Release Technique (ART), provider. Rocktape, instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM), myofascial cupping, and cold laser therapies are a few staples in my clinical “tool belt”.  I use Flexion-Distraction techniques for disc injuries, which we see great results with. Most importantly, I provide easy-to-understand explanations and make sure each patient has a clear understanding of what is contributing to their symptoms + what can be done to address that issue, both with and without my help. Nobody leaves a session without learning a few exercises to do for their condition at home. I strive to offer an “all-in-one” package to allow you to feel good, move better, and perform your best.

Where did you grow up?

Paducah, Kentucky

What’s your favorite type of music? Some favorite bands?

Psychedelic, Indie, Rock, Jazz…I listen to a lot of the Dead and even more Phish. My Morning Jacket, STS9 and Moon Taxi are a few other bands I’ve seen a countless number of times and have gotten to work with as a chiropractor.  I’m into Downtempo and Melodic House. I actually stream classical and world music stations the majority of the time when at home or in the car.

Hobbies?

Hiking, running, wellness, water, nature, reading, and learning. I can never stop learning. I play the ukulele and dabble in synthesizers as a personal outlet for creativity and stress relief.

What was your dream job as a kid?

I wanted to be a “scientist” as a young kid. That’s what I would tell people. The NBA was my fallback.

Where did you go to school?

I graduated from the University of Kentucky in early 2009 and obtained a Doctorate of Chiropractic from Logan College in Saint Louis in late 2012.

Do you offer any other services?

Nutritional supplements ranging from CBD to stress and sleep aids to natural anti-inflammatories to immune boosters, are available at my clinic as well as through my online dispensary. I offer free assessments for Pelvic Stabilizing Orthotics, the feet being a common root cause for chronic knee, hip and low back pain.

How long have you been working out of InDo?

I permanently relocated to Nashville in June of 2019 by way of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and have been operating my clinic out of a suite at InDo since.

What’s your favorite thing about InDo’s space?

InDo’s vibe is top-notch. I love being able to walk to downtown and all the music venues without having to stress about parking or tourists. Having people like John, Lyndsey, and the other tenants to help look out for your business and to network and bounce ideas with is great. The new UV-C air treatment system and having an event space in your building are nice bonuses.

What made you want to become a chiropractor?

I always felt I needed to be in a profession where I was constantly interacting with and helping people. I was first exposed to chiropractic while dealing with shin splints during my senior year of high school cross country season. The medical doctor I saw prescribed pharmaceutical meds and told me to stay off my feet for an entire month, which would have ended my season. Someone suggested a chiropractor, which seemed odd to me at the time, but I gave it a “crack” and was "back" running in less than two weeks, ending up as one of the top finishers at the state meet. It was an eye-opening experience. I began to understand that there can be more to managing musculoskeletal injuries and improving our function beyond merely prescribing chemicals to mask symptoms. I was into it.

Where can people schedule an appointment to see you?

You can learn more about my practice through my website (www.drcharliekautz.com) and find a link to book directly under the “locations” tab.
