InDo Nashville Celebrates 10 Years

The Inspiring Domain for Nashville Entrepreneurs Features Coworking, Office Suites, and an Event Space

In 2025, InDo Nashville, the creative entrepreneurial workspace featuring coworking, office suites, and event space, will celebrate 10 years of providing innovative professional space in the SoBro neighborhood of downtown Nashville.

The name InDo stands for “Inspiration Domain,” which co-founder Katharine Richardson says is exactly what she was going for when she and her husband built the community. “I wanted to create a coworking space with office suites that was not generic and soul-sucking. We focused on colorful design, upcycling materials, and local art to give business owners an exciting and welcoming place to grow their businesses, combining a professional atmosphere with a sense of community and authenticity that’s distinctly Music City.”

Six Benefits of Coworking

Get Out of Your House and Into Your Creative Mind at InDo Nashville

We have all felt the soul-crushing blow of 2020, and going from bustling offices to working from home, isolated and overwhelmed, feeling that monotony of Groundhogs Day and with the sound Talking Heads “Same As It Ever Was, Same As It Ever Was” on repeat in your mind. Are you tired of balancing Zoom calls while folding laundry, the Wi-Fi going out in the middle of a conference call, and trying to remember if you put on pants? Do you find your motivation lacking and ambition drained? Or are you and your significant other or roommates both fighting for space for virtual meetings and conference calls?   We have all discovered that working from home isn’t quite the dream we thought it would be.

Don’t fret! Coworking could provide the perfect solution for you.  Whether you need to just get out of the house once in a while or 24 hour space to grow your business, InDo Nashville has options to jumpstart your success. Here are a few of the top reasons given by your members on why Coworking sparks their motivation and creativity.

Work / Life Balance

We're all familiar with the importance of boundaries, but rarely do we think about the importance of them when it comes to work. With all of the changes 2020 has brought, it’s been more challenging than ever to find the right balance.  Our members let us know that working at InDo helps them separate work from home and providing boundaries around working 24/7.  It helps them disconnect from the stress of housework, kids, and provides them with headspace to think and focus on work. They report an increase in productivity and creativity.

Team Space

While many larger office buildings remain closed, our Coworking space offers a safe, socially distanced environment, for working and in-person team meetings.  Several of our members use our space for monthly or weekly team meetings. They have all reported how uplifting and inspiring it has been to safely gather with their co-workers at InDo.  There is nothing like in-person.  At InDo we follow the latest CDC guidelines to prevent the spread of Covid-19 creating the space you need to get work done.  Our new UV Air System provides state of the art filtration, and we always open the windows to circulate fresh air when weather permits.

Build Your Network

No matter how much we may enjoy spending time with our family or being accompanied by our furry friends at home, many of us are missing the social aspects of our work environment. Whether it’s at the printer station or filling up on a second cup of coffee (lucky for you, ours is unlimited), that 8 a.m. small talk is something we’ve all found ourselves missing. Coworking spaces allows you to work alongside others to beat the quarantine loneliness while retaining a safe social distance.  Our members report being inspired by shared ideas and connections made while working at InDo.

Amenities and Services

The standard Wi-fi many of us use at home for browsing social media, shopping online, or catching up on the latest season of our favorite Netflix show isn’t usually dependable for important Zoom calls or live telecons. Corporations pay millions a year for high-speed internet services in order to maximize efficiency among their employees and that ultimately saves time and money. At InDo, we provide free high-speed 5G internet that gives you the service (and the peace of mind) that you can rely on– muffled mics and frozen screens are a now thing of the past. We provide coffee, tea and water too.  Several of our members who are musicians have used InDo for streaming live music performances, because their home wi-fi can’t support the demands of streaming high-quality music.

All Access, Anytime

Many entrepreneurs and young professionals don’t have the need to stick to the rigid nine to five. Some of our members are night owls who are most productive late at night and others like to work on the weekends. With flexible hours, a Coworking  space like InDo can be just the perfect solution. At InDo, we offer 24/7 key fob access to provide you with a calm and productive environment for whenever that spark of motivation hits. Some of our members even trade-out with their spouses taking turns coming in to work while the other works from home.

Growth Space

Pivoting in this chaotic business environment has found many entrepreneurs creating new businesses or adding new services. Growing a new business without the overhead of a long-term office lease is a huge benefit to Coworking. InDo offers open coworking space, individual dedicated mini-offices called Uncubicles, and office suites, which accommodate all levels of enterprises. Several of the tenants in our private office suites have grown from coworking to a level where they wanted a starter suite, to expanding to larger spaces all within our three floors. As a member at InDo you can establish an address for your business, receive mail, have guests welcomed by our concierge during office hours, arrange usage of private meeting rooms, and even bring your dog to work with you! The InDo community fosters an exciting and welcoming environment that our members have reported has been beneficial in their growth.

Save A Life, Come Work In Our Space

As we enter month six of the global pandemic, we know that with everyone working under the same roof, tensions can be high. We re-opened last month with the goal to create solutions for those struggling with the new normal by adding options for shareable and cost-friendly memberships, which you can find here. >>>

Now, you might be saying to yourself, “well, I’m already getting used to my routine at home, why would I pay to go work somewhere else?”

We thought you’d never ask.

Here are just two reasons that shed light on how our co-working memberships are investments that can save your relationships and eliminate added stress.

  1. It Actually Saves Money

Let’s take a look at the expenses of working from home that you might have overlooked.

Multiple people working under the same roof creates an immediate strain on internet capacity, a need for more trips to the store to keep the kitchen stocked (hello, coffee), lights being constantly used with the A/C continuously cranking, bills start to skyrocket. In addition, there’s the added cost of creating a home office (if you have space), office supplies, printing, etc. While yes, most companies provide reimbursement for a few of these necessities, it most likely doesn’t even scratch the surface of the additional expenses. When working at our space, these looked-over amenities are factored into your monthly membership.

Pro tip: most companies and employers will pay for your co-working membership, especially if it saves them money in the long run, there’s never any hurt in asking!

    2. Our Atmosphere Is Unique

We know. Every co-working company says that about their space but trust me, ours delivers. We have a creative vibe that encourages individuality so that you can be productive in your sweatpants in a judgment-free space. Members also have the added bonus of access to conference rooms that can use for your professional meetings, zoom calls, or business presentations.

Our decor is music and artist-focused with local paintings, record collections, and brightly colored walls which is opposite from other local workspaces whose norm consists of white walls and a sterile vibe. Our team is small (literally 3 of us) making it the perfect atmosphere to network and collaborate within our tight-knit community. That trend has unfortunately faded with bigger co-working companies as they expand or open new locations, steering away from the core intent of co-working spaces. We’ve stuck to this essential value of wanting to connect people and it happens organically 98% of the time when you work in our space.

If you want to give InDo a try to see what we’re all about, click <here> and snag a free day pass OR better yet, if you’re sold and ready to get the hell out of the house (safely),

Meet The Musician's Physician!

For this month’s Spotlight, we sat down and chatted with Dr. Charlie Kautz, our InHouse, licensed Chiropractor to get to know more about him and his business!

Tell me about your business/work:

I am a chiropractor who has had the incredible opportunity to have spent nearly my entire career taking care of professional touring musicians. One aspect of my business is mobile chiropractic services, setting up on-site at music venues and studios, or even on tour. I relocated to Nashville not only to be a natural health and wellness resource for the music community here but also to create a brick-and-mortar space. My style of practice is boutique, concierge-style, and features thorough examinations and treatments, education, and a non-cookie-cutter approach to identifying the root cause and correcting it as quickly as possible.

A few of my favorite conditions to treat are:

chronic headaches

tendonitis

plantar fasciitis

“text neck”

sleeping problems

TMJ

carpal tunnel syndrome

any nerve issues in the neck/arms/hands

I’m a certified Active Release Technique (ART), provider. Rocktape, instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM), myofascial cupping, and cold laser therapies are a few staples in my clinical “tool belt”.  I use Flexion-Distraction techniques for disc injuries, which we see great results with. Most importantly, I provide easy-to-understand explanations and make sure each patient has a clear understanding of what is contributing to their symptoms + what can be done to address that issue, both with and without my help. Nobody leaves a session without learning a few exercises to do for their condition at home. I strive to offer an “all-in-one” package to allow you to feel good, move better, and perform your best.

Where did you grow up?

Paducah, Kentucky

What’s your favorite type of music? Some favorite bands?

Psychedelic, Indie, Rock, Jazz…I listen to a lot of the Dead and even more Phish. My Morning Jacket, STS9 and Moon Taxi are a few other bands I’ve seen a countless number of times and have gotten to work with as a chiropractor.  I’m into Downtempo and Melodic House. I actually stream classical and world music stations the majority of the time when at home or in the car.

Hobbies?

Hiking, running, wellness, water, nature, reading, and learning. I can never stop learning. I play the ukulele and dabble in synthesizers as a personal outlet for creativity and stress relief.

What was your dream job as a kid?

I wanted to be a “scientist” as a young kid. That’s what I would tell people. The NBA was my fallback.

Where did you go to school?

I graduated from the University of Kentucky in early 2009 and obtained a Doctorate of Chiropractic from Logan College in Saint Louis in late 2012.

Do you offer any other services?

Nutritional supplements ranging from CBD to stress and sleep aids to natural anti-inflammatories to immune boosters, are available at my clinic as well as through my online dispensary. I offer free assessments for Pelvic Stabilizing Orthotics, the feet being a common root cause for chronic knee, hip and low back pain.

How long have you been working out of InDo?

I permanently relocated to Nashville in June of 2019 by way of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and have been operating my clinic out of a suite at InDo since.

What’s your favorite thing about InDo’s space?

InDo’s vibe is top-notch. I love being able to walk to downtown and all the music venues without having to stress about parking or tourists. Having people like John, Lyndsey, and the other tenants to help look out for your business and to network and bounce ideas with is great. The new UV-C air treatment system and having an event space in your building are nice bonuses.

What made you want to become a chiropractor?

I always felt I needed to be in a profession where I was constantly interacting with and helping people. I was first exposed to chiropractic while dealing with shin splints during my senior year of high school cross country season. The medical doctor I saw prescribed pharmaceutical meds and told me to stay off my feet for an entire month, which would have ended my season. Someone suggested a chiropractor, which seemed odd to me at the time, but I gave it a “crack” and was "back" running in less than two weeks, ending up as one of the top finishers at the state meet. It was an eye-opening experience. I began to understand that there can be more to managing musculoskeletal injuries and improving our function beyond merely prescribing chemicals to mask symptoms. I was into it.

Where can people schedule an appointment to see you?

You can learn more about my practice through my website (www.drcharliekautz.com) and find a link to book directly under the “locations” tab.

The Future of Co(vid)Working

As the Covid-19 pandemic continues to wreak havoc, most of us have found ourselves either working from home, looking for a job, or trying to start our own business. Working from home presents its own set of challenges, even in regular times. And while you can't beat the commute, not everyone has the discipline required to focus on work for eight hours straight in a non-work environment. For some, the temptation to do a load of laundry, have Netflix on in the background or walk the dog several times a day is too strong. Those that already work from home are joined by spouses, who need space as well, kids who don't have school or daycare, or a roommate who is no longer traveling for work. What was once a quiet, private work domain has become a commune of sorts. And, while no one knows for sure what the "new normal" is going to look like, many speculate that a more significant number of people will be working remotely on some level. This is why I believe that coworking spaces like InDo Nashville, which offer a variety of flexible, cost-effective membership levels, will prove to be indispensable to the redesign of our work structure, and provide a solution to the growing problem of work/life balance.

With this in mind, we've arrived at a three-pronged approach, adapting to the changing world and preparing for our grand reopening. The first is a well thought out sanitation protocol to reassure our members that we have done everything in our power to make the environment as clean and safe as possible. The second is the creation of new and affordable membership options designed to mitigate the challenges of working remotely. The third is our unique reward program, designed to compensate our members for loyalty and referrals.

Our sanitation protocol comes from guidelines set forth by the mayor's office of Nashville as well as the CDC. InDo will also create a social distance/occupancy policy, installing ultraviolet germicidal irradiation systems in our HVAC units, a daily cleaning schedule, and making disinfectant available throughout the building. We will provide each member with a welcome packet consisting of gloves, sanitizer spray, and masks if we can obtain them. While no one can guarantee 100% effectiveness, we aim to get as close to that number as possible so that people have the confidence to come to InDo Nashville and take advantage of our membership packages.

In addition to our existing full-time membership, we have created several cost-effective membership levels designed to enable people to be efficient while working remotely, get a new project off the ground and maintain a healthy work/life balance.

For the person who only needs to get out occasionally, we have reduced the cost of day passes from $20 to $15 and will come with a punch card to track usage. For the unemployed person with an entrepreneurial spirit, we have created the $100 Jump Starter, which is a combination of five day passes, three hours of meeting room time, and one guest pass. Our memberships will be a great way to get your new business off the ground in a professional work environment, without breaking the bank. The next level up from the Jump Starter is the Sanity Saver. Perfect for people who are losing their minds because there is no distinction between your home and work life.

For $150 per month, this package includes ten-day passes, five hours of meeting room time, and three guest passes. And finally, in our quest to preserve marriages, relationships, and friendships alike, we have come up with a shareable membership called The Lifeline. Now that everyone is home all the time, it has become more challenging to work without interruption. Kids are screaming in the background of your sales call, your spouse needs to use what was your home office for his zoom, and your awesome roommate who was awesome because he traveled five days a week is no longer traveling. The Lifeline will solve that problem by enabling two people living at the same address to share a full-time membership, provided only one person is on-site at a time.

All memberships levels will be able to participate in our InDo Rewards program, to provide additional value to the memberships and promote our facility to others. They will be used to earn extra day passes, guest passes, membership upgrades, and more. Please check out our website for more details, and we hope to see you soon!

Co-Working At InDo Nashville: The Creative Difference

At InDo Nashville, we wanted to create an environment that would be the antithesis of the gray and beige corporate world. At the same time, look nothing like the large-scale coworking chains who share a similar look and feel. We felt that if we're going to build a space for creatives, the environment needed to be unique, thought-provoking, and change the way people viewed the workplace. The last thing we wanted to be was for people to walk into InDo Nashville and say that it reminded them of somewhere else, or worse yet, for people not to react at all. I think we have been successful in that regard.

RO2_2836 (1).jpg
We felt that if we’re going to build a space for creatives, the environment needed to be unique, thought-provoking, and change the way people viewed the workplace.

So why is this important? Because we are living in the fast-moving, ever-changing digital age, where we reward innovation, and lack thereof can be your downfall. Every day, people are striving to create better, more efficient ways of doing tasks that already exist. Innovation and creativity are essential ingredients that drive new markets and create new opportunities. I believe that the environment in which a person works should, in some way, cause people to look at ordinary things in a different light. By doing so, it will unlock the part of your brain where creativity lives. With the design of InDo, you're in an environment where the creative part of your mind is consistently operating. Like an antivirus program running on your computer, warmed up and ready to be called into action when needed.

Take our UnCubicles, for instance. I built these in response to demand for a dedicated workspace that a person could come to every day and call their own. They also solved a problem with an area of dead space in our building, which was not generating any revenue. The trick was figuring out how to create affordable cubicles that didn't suck the life out an individual and fit in with our look and philosophy. I also wanted to be sure that at least two of the six would be accessible by wheelchair because I am a firm believer that everyone, regardless of their physical abilities, should be able to move around InDo Nashville with dignity and ease. It took about six months of measuring, thinking, sketching, and revising before I arrived at a design that I felt would work. I then outlined the layout with the painter's tape on the floor, took the final measurements, and got to work.

InDo Uncubicles

One of the challenges I gave myself was to use as much upcycled material as possible. That meant using paint colors that I already had, and many trips to my friends at Turnip Green Creative Reuse. The structure itself required the purchase of 2 by 4s at Home Depot, and I, of course, I used a licensed electrician to run power, but the decorations were all recycled. After 4 months of hacking around in my basement building the walls, I brought the pieces to InDo and assembled the structure there. Remarkably, they all fit together, but that is not to say I didn't screw up a hundred times in my basement. Overall, I am happy with how they turned out, but like the rest of InDo, they will always be a work in progress.

At $300 per month, they are a fraction of the cost of an office and offer a fair amount of privacy. They each are about 6' by 6' and have a window and a skylight, so they don't feel too enclosed. Members are welcome to decorate them however they please to add a personal touch to their workspace.
